IAM RoadSmart-backed petition calling on action by the UK government to save motorcyclists’ lives
The road safety charity, IAM RoadSmart, has launched a petition calling on the government to scrap VAT on life-saving air vests which are currently subject to 20% VAT rate.
Motorcycles make up 3.5% of all licenced vehicle types, yet riders represent a fifth (21%) of all fatalities and 12.5% of all casualties.
IAM RoadSmart’s survey discovered that nearly two thirds of motorcyclists believe that the cost of safety wear has prevented them from purchasing items that would enhance their safety while on a motorcycle, and 70% stated that the government should make personal protective equipment (PPE) more affordable.
Antony Kildare, CEO at IAM RoadSmart, said:
“IAM RoadSmart wants air vests to become a fundamental part of motorcyclists’ safety wear, just as much as a helmet or gloves, but if our research is anything to go by, cost is preventing most from accessing this potentially life-saving equipment.
“When you consider that zero per cent VAT has long applied to helmets, we see no good reason why this can’t also be applied to air vests. By signing this petition we’re working together to make vital PPE more accessible to the wider motorcycling community.”
