Avoiding Halloween Horror Breakdowns: IAM RoadSmart tips for a safe TRIP
Planning a journey in advance is the key to having a nightmare-free drive. So if you’re going on a Halloween mini-break, follow these steps from National Highways to make sure you have a safe T.R.I.P:
Top-up your broomstick
Ensure your car or bike’s fuel tank or battery is full before hitting the road. Running out of fuel in the middle of nowhere can be a real nightmare!
Rest Every 2 Hours:
If you are heading off to see family or friends over the Halloween weekend, take a break every two hours or 100 miles, whichever comes sooner. Stretch your legs, grab a snack, and avoid the zombie-like fatigue that can creep up on long drives.
Inspect tyre pressure and tread
Check the tread by placing a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of the tyre, in at least three locations around each tyre. If the outer band of the 20p coin is hidden, the tread depth is above the legal limit of 1.6mm. However, if the outer band of the coin is visible then the tyres may be unsafe and illegal.
Prepare for all weather conditions
Top up your oil, Screen wash, and other essential fluids. You don’t want to be caught in a foggy situation without clear visibility. Check your windscreen wipers are in full working order. Check all your lights, including headlights, brake lights, indicators, and fog lights. You don’t want to be driving in the dark without proper illumination.
Chief Examiner at IAM RoadSmart, Richard Gladman, says, “Ensuring your car is safe and secure isn’t just about avoiding breakdowns—it’s about protecting the little ones who may be wandering around this Halloween. Regular vehicle maintenance is crucial for everyone’s safety. Keep your car in top shape and enjoy a worry-free night!”
Have a spook-tacular and safe Halloween trip!
