Met Office issues rare red ‘danger to life’ alert as Storm Goretti barrels towards the UK
The Met Office has issued a rare red warning for ‘dangerous, stormy’ winds in south-west England as Storm Goretti threatens gusts of up to 100mph.
The alert, in place from 4pm to 11pm on Thursday, warns of ‘violent gusts’ hitting Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly for two to three hours, with exposed areas facing winds of 80-100 mph or more.
IAM RoadSmart Director of Policy and Standards Nicholas Lyes said, “Storm Goretti will pack some serious punch for those in the South West with damaging wind gusts. On top of heavy rainfall, driving conditions will be treacherous. Where red warnings have been issued, people should not travel. In other areas, drivers should avoid bridges and exposed areas, such as coastal routes. In strong winds, drivers should slow down to allow more time to react to hazards that may blow into their path and maintain a firm grip on the steering wheel.”
