REACTION: IAM RoadSmart responds to new reported road casualties in Britain

On the Reported road casualties in GB, final results, 2025:

IAM RoadSmart Director of Policy and External Communications Nicholas Lyes said: “These figures show a lost decade in terms of reducing the number of serious casualties and highlights the urgency of implementing measures to improve road safety. An overall increase in the number of killed and seriously injured in 2025 is troubling and we are deeply concerned by the increase in motorcyclist fatalities. Those using two wheels are among the most vulnerable road users and we need a concerted effort to bring these numbers down by reforming licensing and training. The UK Government’s strategy will undoubtedly address some of these issues, but it must be backed by clear timelines, proper funding, and decisive action if we are to meet the ambitious targets the strategy sets out.”

IAM RoadSmart Director of Policy and External Communications Nicholas Lyes said: “We welcome the fall in the numbers killed or seriously injured in drink drive-related collisions. However, the proportion of fatalities that involved a driver over the drink-drive limit has remained stubbornly high for more than a decade.

“Drink driving ruins lives, and despite the decades of campaigns and the general shift towards it being seen as socially unacceptable, these figures show we cannot afford to ease off in tackling this scourge. We must redouble our efforts to continue shifting mindsets, and lowering the limit in England and Wales alongside boosting enforcement would help send the message that having none for the road is best.”
