Stay Cool and Safe: Essential Summer Driving Tips

The weather may still be slightly temperamental this summer, but it’s still a good idea to prepare for warmer temperatures as it can mean extra demands on you and your car. So here are some top tips from IAM RoadSmart to help with the challenges of summer driving.

Before you hit the road

Carry out the POWDERYCheck – Petrol (or any fuel), Oil, Water, Damage, Electrics, Rubber and Yourself before each journey. Some of those checks are even more essential when the thermometer begins to rise, for instance if you have a long way to go, you’re planning on being away for a few days, or you have a ferry, or flight to catch.

Don’t flip flop over safety

While it’s not illegal to drive in flip-flops in the UK, it’s not recommended. Flip-flops can be slippery and may get stuck under the pedals, affecting your control of the car. Rule 97 of The Highway Code states that clothing and footwear mustn't interfere with your ability to use the vehicle's controls effectively. You can be hit with a fine for "driving without due care and attention".

Stay Shady

To ensure a safe and comfortable journey, it’s essential to have a good pair of sunglasses ready. Sunglasses not only reduce glare but also protect your eyes from harmful UV rays, helping you keep focus. So, before you hit the road on a sunny day, make sure your shades are within easy reach.

Tune in safely

The songs you play in the car can make a road trip unforgettable but it’s best not to take your eyes off the road and change the tunes yourself, as it could land you in a whole heap of trouble. Since March 2022, it's illegal to use your mobile phone behind the wheel - including to scroll through songs - and if caught, drivers could face a £200 fine as well as six points on their licence. Set up your playlist before you start and limit any scrolling to voice control.

Keep your furry friends cool

If you are hitting the road with your dog, remember, leaving them in parked cars can be extremely dangerous and potentially fatal. Dogs are particularly vulnerable because they cannot regulate their body temperature as efficiently as humans. Even with the windows slightly open, the car can become a furnace, putting your furry friend at serious risk. Don’t leave them in the car unattended and make sure your planned stops are dog friendly too.

Summer allergies

A runny nose, headache, and constant sneezing are just a few of the symptoms hay fever sufferers deal with during the summer months. These symptoms can affect motorists in several ways, and while most of us can’t wait to get outside to enjoy the sunshine, for others, the warmer weather can cause misery. Stay hydrated

When the mercury rises, being cooped up in a car can be stressful, especially if you hit an unexpected delay. Always keep plenty of water with you and make sure to keep your passengers hydrated.

Richard Gladman, IAM RoadSmart Chief Examiner, said: “Travelling in the summer can be challenging with traffic jams and delays magnified by sitting in a stuffy car. If you are stuck in a jam, switch off the aircon and open the windows - the fresh air might lighten the mood. Planning and preparation will make the trip more enjoyable and if you make the journey part of your trip with a sightseeing stop along the way your holiday has begun a day early. If you do need to get to a location for a flight or ferry try and travel outside of rush hour and leave plenty of time to get there - better to be drinking coffee in the departure lounge than getting stressed on the motorway.”
