Road safety volunteers honoured by Nigel Mansell CBE at national awards

• Annual awards recognise the dedication of more than 5,000 volunteers and 160 local groups across the UK
• Awards took place at iconic Silverstone in the charity’s 70^thanniversary year with F1 Champion Nigel Mansell CBE attending

A national network of volunteers came together on Friday 18^th September as IAM RoadSmart held its annual awards ceremony that celebrates the dedication and achievements of volunteer network.

Alongside attendees, 1992 Formula One World Champion and IAM RoadSmart President Nigel Mansell CBE attended the event at the iconic Silverstone Circuit – where he won four British Grand Prix - to present the awards to this year’s outstanding volunteers and groups.

With more than 5,000 volunteers and 160 local groups nationwide, IAM RoadSmart relies on its volunteers to support driver and rider training through roles including Observers and Examiners, many of whom give up their free time to improve standards on our roads. In the last 12 months, almost 4,000 people have gone through advanced driver or advanced rider training. These awards provided the perfect backdrop to celebrate the outstanding achievements across a range of categories.

The Rising Star of the Year award was won by Leanda Hoyland-Linch of the Suffolk Group, recognising her contribution as a new volunteer who has made a positive impact in a short period of time.

Leanda said: “I'm incredibly honoured to receive the award. Volunteering with the Suffolk Group has been such a rewarding experience, and I’ve really enjoyed being part of a team that makes a positive difference in the community. I’m grateful for the support and encouragement I’ve received and I’m excited to continue learning, getting involved and contributing to the future.”

Neil Carter of the Milton Keynes Group (MKAM) was named runner-up, while Glasgow North Group received the Group Partnership of the Year award.

The Driver Volunteer of the Year award went to Carolyn Menteith of the Gloucestershire Group, recognising her dedication to helping drivers develop their skills, confidence and safety on the road.

Carolyn said “Winning Volunteer of the Year came as a complete surprise, especially among so many dedicated volunteers across the country. I’m incredibly proud of the award.

“IAM RoadSmart has given me a community where I can share my passion for driving, help others build their skills and confidence, and play my part in making our roads safer for everyone.”

The Volunteer of the Year – Rider award was presented to Derek Baker: “A huge thank you to everyone who has supported me and to all the resolute volunteers who make such a difference. It’s a privilege to be part of such a great organisation.”

Shona Johnstone, Chair of IAM RoadSmart, said “Volunteering is not just about donating time; it is about offering your unique skills, empathy, and energy to promote the cause of safer roads. Every day, you bring your time, energy, and passion to our community, making a difference in everything we do. We simply could not achieve our mission without your dedication and commitment.

Amanda Smith, Field Operations Director at IAM RoadSmart, said “Our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do.
