REACTION: Department for Transport reported road casualties in Great Britain, provisional estimates for 2024
IAM RoadSmart's response to the Department for Transport's provisional 2024 road casualty estimates for Great Britain.
IAM RoadSmart Director of Policy and Standards Nicholas Lyes said: “These figures demonstrate a troubling lack of progress in bringing down fatal and serious injuries on our road network. Moreover, 2024 saw a significant increase in the number of motorcyclists that were killed, highlighting that more needs to be done to protect some of the most vulnerable road users. The Government’s updated road safety strategy cannot come soon enough.
Clarification: In the original quote we stated the figures relating to motorcycle fatalities were ‘- the highest number since 2018’. Note this comparison was related to motorcycle riders rather than motorcycle users so we have removed this comparison given the subtle differences in DfT reporting.
